From fetching the ball to Flyball; How a trip to The North East Dog Festival sparked a new Hobby
Two years ago, Kim and her family discovered the North East Dog Festival and it was love at first sight for their two cross-breed Yorkies. Kim commented “It was two days of dog heaven! I described it as dog Disneyland to my husband!”
After pre booking their early bird tickets, Kim and her husband returned for the full weekend last year. There were so many different things that dogs could try, but knowing just how fast and agile Obi is, they entered, and won, the fastest recall have a go competition.
Since Obi was six months old, Kim had always thought of getting him involved in some form of sport, and when they tried flyball, it turned out to be the perfect fit for him. Obi was a natural and they were invited to attend a session with Eclipse Flyball Team. After a few weeks of training, they became new members.
Now Kim and Obi are preparing for their first competition with Eclipse, and Obi is doing well in training, with a great reputation among his teammates; he might be small but he is mighty with a big attitude! Kim said “We have gone from strength to strength- making friends, building relationships with our new team mates, and fetching the ball!”
"We cannot wait to see where the year takes us!" says Kim. "Our flyball career has just begun, and we will be returning to the North East Dog Festival this year, helping our team speak to others who may be interested in joining too. Thanks to North East Dog Festival, we now have a new hobby that we just adore with new friends in our team mates….and it all happened one day at the dog festival!"
Festival directors Rebecca and Dawn commented; “This is what the festival is all about, introducing people to the wonderful clubs and instructors in the North East, giving dogs an outlet and providing owners with a chance to try a variety of sports. It will be great to see Kim and Obi return not as visitors, but as part of the Eclipse team; so keep an eye out for the mighty yorkie in the main ring!”
