“There are three canicross groups covering the North East of England, North of Tyne Canicross, Tees Valley Canicross and Canisports Seaham.
The aim of the groups is to introduce the sport of canicross into the area for those who like to run and want to form stronger bonds with their dogs. The sport is open to all breeds of dogs and to runners of all abilities and ages. It can be both competitive or as a means of just keeping fit, having fun with your best friend and socialising. The groups offer a means for those starting out in the sport to learn more about the equipment required for canicross, racing etiquette and to take part in training sessions.
The “racing season” starts September and lasts until the end of May and members are encouraged to try out the many events and leagues available up and down the country. Each group has its own identity and running routes but occasionally meet up for social runs. Members are welcome to join in a run from any group.
North of Tyne Canicross have 4 branches located at Ashington, North Tyneside, Coast and Gateshead and use routes in and around these areas. Members can run at any branch they want to and each branch has a facebook page to keep members informed of what’s on. The branches have a dedicated “leader” as a point of contact who arranges the session and looks after those who attend the run.
North of Tyne Canicross Group social runs are held a couple of times a year where all members are able to meet with each other. These usually take place at a venue outside the local area and may include a meet up with one of the other groups.”
